We use a straightedge to verify flatness, float high spots with floor leveler when needed, and confirm the backer board or concrete slab is properly fastened. That preparation work is not glamorous, but it is what separates a tile installation that lasts from one that does not.
We plan every layout on paper before we cut. That means finding the visual center of the room, accounting for how cuts will land at doorways and cabinets, and deciding whether a diagonal or offset pattern is practical given the room dimensions. Once we start setting, we work in sections and back-butter large-format tiles to get full coverage behind each piece.
