Sage Green Subway Shower in New Braunfels
About This Project
This bathroom remodel in a Gruene-area home in New Braunfels converted an older tub-shower combination into a walk-in shower with a frameless glass door. The tile is a 3x6 glossy subway in a muted sage green, set in a standard horizontal brick-offset pattern. The warm pendant lighting in the bathroom creates a pleasant interaction with the glazed tile surface, which reflects the warm tones without being harsh.
The existing bathroom had a pier-and-beam subfloor, which is common in the older Gruene-area homes. Before any tile work, we installed an uncoupling membrane over the entire bathroom floor to isolate the tile from the movement in the wood subfloor below. This step is critical in these homes because the wood moves seasonally with humidity changes, and tile without this isolation layer will crack at the grout joints within a year. The shower floor was built on a pre-sloped mortar bed inside the new curb, with a center drain and small-format mosaic tile for slip resistance.
What We Did
Installed uncoupling membrane over pier-and-beam subfloor before any tile work
Built pre-sloped mortar bed inside new shower curb for proper drainage
Applied waterproofing membrane to all shower surfaces and set sage green subway tile
Set mosaic shower floor, grouted all surfaces, and caulked all corners and the curb top
