Travertine Bathroom Renovation in San Marcos
About This Project
This bathroom in an older San Marcos home near the Rio Vista area received a full wall tile renovation using filled travertine in a 12x24 format. The walls behind the double vessel sink vanity and along the tub surround were tiled to ceiling height. A decorative mosaic border strip in a mix of glass and stone was incorporated at the midpoint of the wall, which is a detail that requires careful planning to ensure it lands at the same height on all four walls regardless of the tile course count.
Travertine comes with natural voids in the face that need to be grouted before the field grout is applied. We grouted the voids first with an unsanded grout that matches the stone, let it cure, and then grouted the joints between tiles. This two-step process is what filled travertine requires to look right. The finished surface was sealed with a penetrating impregnator to protect against moisture and staining without altering the natural matte texture of the stone.
What We Did
Planned mosaic border height to land consistently across all four walls
Set 12x24 filled travertine with polymer-modified mortar on cement board backer
Grouted natural face voids first, then grouted field joints after cure
Applied penetrating impregnator sealer to all travertine surfaces
